SECTION I
POSTERS, PRINTS, PAINTINGS AND OTHER JAGUAR ART (*all estimates in Pounds Sterling)
NB Racing items within these categories can be found in Section E. Specific XK items are in Section K.
I/l - A drawing of the 1938 model year SS Jaguar 1.5 litre chassis. Extraordinary detail. An original work by Frederick Gordon Crosby - initialled by the artist. This work appeared on page 555 of the 24 September 1937 issue of Autocar. A copy of that magazine accompanies this Lot. Colour photographs of the Lot are available if required.
Gordon Crosby was the premier pre-war motoring artist. His draftmanship and eye for line was excellent. However, in the view of this writer and others, it was his ability to capture the dash and drama of motor sport which has never been equalled - then or now.
Gordon Crosby's unique and enduring contribution to the Jaguar ethos is, of course, the Jaguar mascot which he designed. He also had a soft spot for SS Jaguar cars. He owned four saloons at various times and his son Michael told me he used to enjoy his long continental runs in the cars.
However, notwithstanding these links to SS Jaguars, he only painted a tiny hand-full of the cars. Two of these paintings are in the Company's own collection (see JCIl4). His full-colour artwork regularly fetches well into five figures at auction. This Lot therefore represents a very rare opportunity to add an original work by the master to your own collection and at a most reasonable price.
The work is in soft pencil highlighted in white gouache on heavy greylbrown art paper. It has been mounted on to a card backing and fronted with a window mount. The image revealed by the window is 27.5 inches by 18.5 inches. The overall size of the mount is 32 inches by 24 inches.
A 4.5 inch tear top left touches the image at the radiator. This has been professionally repaired with archival tape. There are other minor tears, also repaired, and some slight staining at bottom right. None detract significantly from the quality of the work which would repay gentle restoration followed by full mounting and glazing. (e£ 1000 - £ 1250)
I/2- D Type Jaguar 1954. An original airbrush painting of the short-nose car by John Pendleton. Highlighted in gouache. Signed by the artist. Image 19.5 x 14.5 overall 25.5 x 21. Low three quarters right front angle. Highly detailed. V sl rubbed but does not detract. Fine, nr Mint. (e£ 100-150)
I/3 - SS 100 ( 1935). An original airbrush painting of LNW 100 by John Pendleton. Highlighted in gouache. Signed by the artist. Image 19.5 x 14.5 - overall 25.5 x 21. Both this and the previous Lot have a calendar artwork "feel" about them. Mint. (e£ 100-150)
I/4 - Preliminary Artwork for CastrolISS Cars poster or magazine ad. 15 x 22 overall. Shows basic background scheme and SS Jaguar wings in black & white at top. I/27. A real stunner to close this section. It is a magnificent English bone china Jaguar crouching on a log ready to pounce. This work of art is in full underglaze colour and stands 13 inches high with a width of 19 inches.
The beast was produced by the Renaissance Studios of Stoke on Trent, in the heart of England's pottery industry, in 1981 . It is No 15 of a production limited to only 500 worldwide.
This work was designed by Howard J. Wedgwood, of the famous pottery family, and modelled by F Garbutt of Renaissance, who has signed it on the base under the glaze. Naturally, a certificate of authenticity, signed by Howard Wedgwood, accompanies the sculpture which comes protected by its original tailor-made packaging.
A very rare and quite splendid piece for the Jaguar enthusiast. Mint. (e£300-400)
