A special issue of the Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers. 1986. The detailed story of the genesis and birth of the XJ40. The scene was set by Jim Randle, then individual engineers spoke about the aspects they were responsible for. This is a unique record but there is also an intriguing sub-text. Operation “Cat Flap” was the story of how a Jaguar team, led by Stuart Spencer, Manager of Jaguar’s Design Studio, manoeuvred a full-size car through narrow doors, round corners, up a flight of stairs and into the auditorium of the Institution’s premises in Birdcage Walk, London. The accompanying photos show some of this along with the auditorium as normally laid out and as it looked ready of the Jaguar Presentation. If you would like to know more, I recommend the book “Jaguar Design” by Nick Hull, one of Jaguar’s lead designers, which tells the story in more detail. Fascinating! VG.
